Encinitas to Celebrate Dia de los Muertos
A Day of the Dead festival in North County San Diego.
Encinitas, CA. Encinitas Friends of the Arts (EFA) and the City of Encinitas announce the 5th annual Encinitas Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The free festival takes place on Saturday, October 27, 2018 from 12:00-4:00 P.M. at the Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive, Encinitas, CA 92024. Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear will make welcoming remarks. “This city event raises awareness and an appreciation for this significant Latino cultural celebration,” said Mayor Blakespear. “Last year’s event drew several thousand people and we anticipate a larger response this year.”
The family-friendly celebration will include continuous performances. Danza Azteca Misión San Luis Rey will bless the Ofrenda with ancient traditional dances, followed by Mariachi Real de San Diego, Ballet Folklorico Rancho Buena Vista High School, Danza Alegre, Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego, and Ballet Folklorico de San Dieguito. The festival ends with singer Rafael Renteria performing songs from the film, Coco, with dancing by Ballet Folklorico El Tapatio. Festival activities include skull face painting, tissue flowers and sugar skull workshops, a Day of the Dead art exhibit by Paul Ecke Central School students, and ladies dressed as “Catrinas” for selfie photos. Outside will be a low rider car show by the Callejeros de Encinitas Car Club, artist demonstrations, vendors and food trucks.
A Community Ofrenda—or remembrance altar—will feature a replica of the Surfing Madonna, by artist Mark Patterson. “Having the Surfing Madonna in the Ofrenda makes this a uniquely Encinitas event,” said Arts Program Administrator Jim Gilliam. All are invited to honor the memory of a loved one or friend by contributing a photograph or non-valuable remembrance to the Ofrenda.
A Community Ofrenda will be on view from October 25 through November 5 in the lobby of the Encinitas Library, located at 540 Cornish Drive, Encinitas, CA 92024, along with a Day of the Dead student exhibit or artwork and altars. “We’re excited to expand our Day of the Dead week at the library and look forward to the altars that teens and families will make,” said Teen Librarian Diana Minuzzi. The library will host the Altar Workshop for teens and families on Thursday, Oct. 18 and 25, at 5:00 P.M., and a Death Café Workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 3:30 P.M. “People Come together in a relaxed and safe setting to discuss death, drink tea and eat delicious cake,” said Minuzzi. “The objective is to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives.” The workshops are free of charge. Contact the library at 760-753-7376 for details, or visit: www.sdcl.org
Beatriz Villarreal, Program Director of the Mano a Mano Foundation, will emcee the Day of the Dead festival. “This is a huge deal for the Latino community,” said Dr. Villarreal. “Dia de los Muertos provides people with the opportunity to rejoice in the living memories of their loved ones. It is an important way to celebrate our culture and serves as an educational resource, teaching people around the world about our traditions.” Día de los Muertos, a celebration of life and remembrance, is traditionally celebrated each year on November 1 and 2.
Encinitas Dia de los Muertos is made possible by funding from the City of Encinitas and Mizel Family Foundation Community Grant Program, Encinitas Friends of the Arts, the City of Encinitas, and numerous sponsors.
“Encinitas has the second-highest number of artists per capita in San Diego County and it is a pleasure and a thrill to work with many of them in shaping this event,” said EFA President Naimeh Woodward. “I look forward to highlighting their artistry and celebrating Dia de los Muertos with our community.” The mission of Encinitas Friends of the Arts is to partner with the City of Encinitas by fundraising and advocating for the cultural arts in Encinitas, and for city-owned arts venues. Established by the Encinitas Commission for the Arts in April, 2014, EFA works to elevate arts and culture by presenting cultural programs, arts education and public art. The public is invited to an artists’ reception at the Off Track Gallery featuring a cash award ceremony to Encinitas Friends of the Arts and also to three promising MiraCosta College students — Rachel Greenstein, Priscilla Rivera, and Jonathan Broberg — on Aug. 11 from 4 to 7 p.m.
Naimeh Tanha will be accepting the award for the Encinitas Friends of the Arts, a 501c(3) nonprofit organization, established by local residents and a board of dedicated volunteers to support a vibrant arts community. The mission of Encinitas Friends of the Arts is to partner with the City of Encinitas by fundraising and advocating for the cultural arts in Encinitas and a city-owned Arts Center.
Rachel Greenstein excels in both watercolors and oils. She has won awards for her watercolors in the MiraCosta’s juried student show in the past two years. Priscilla Rivera has had a talent for portraits and figurative subjects since she was in high school and garnered many awards for her art in The COAL Shows. She has continued to impress her professors with this ability. She won first place this spring for her three-part portrait series titled “Triptych of Andy” in MiraCosta’s annual juried student show. In addition, she won first in the life drawing category.
Jonathan Broberg works in a variety of media and is an outstanding draftsman. His work is whimsical and well executed. He has won numerous awards in MiraCosta’s juried student exhibit in the last two years, including second place wins for watercolor, oil, colored pencil and a pastel. He was a featured artist in the MCC Bluegate Gallery. He is planning to attend the Laguna Beach School of Art and Design.

Encinitas Advocate: Passport to Brazil Article
/in UncategorizedThe Encinitas Advocate has published an article about EFA’s Passport to Brazil.
Passport to Brazil event to take place April 28
The diverse cultural background of Brazil includes many celebrations and festivals that have become known around the world, such as Brazilian Carnival. This colorful culture creates an environment that makes Brazil a popular destination. Encinitas Friends of the Arts (EFA) will recreate this culture at Passport to the Brazil, on April 28, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., at the Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive. In keeping with EFA’s mission to celebrate diversity through arts and culture, the event will foster an appreciation and fresh awareness of ancient and modern Brazil, and raise funds for much-needed arts programs in the city.
“Passport to the Brazil” will feature many of Southern California’s finest cultural artists, musicians and dancers. Cajuina is a San Diego-based band specializing in authentic Forró, Samba, Bossa Nova and Musica Popular Brasileira. Performers include Bahia-born Lucas Lima on guitar and vocals, Stefanie Schmitz on saxophone and clarinet, Emi Cara on percussion, and Ben Rempel on drums. They are best known for getting a high-energy dance party started.
Super Sonic Samba School plays traditional samba rhythms of Brazil, featuring live percussionists, singers and dancers. The school was founded in 1990 with the mission to spread the vibrant Brazilian culture through drum and dance.
Brazilian dancer and artist Dina Bedenko will also perform. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of Energia Entertainment, producing and curating cultural events, and merging visual and performing arts.
Artist Patricia Frischer has created four 7’ banners that will be used as a stage backdrop for Passport to Brazil performances. The banners, which will be available for purchase, are an homage to major Brazilian artist Tarsila do Amaral (1886–1973), who is known as the mother of contemporary art in that country. Frischer received an MFA in sculpture from the California College of Arts and Crafts.
Artist Heather Gibb will display her exotic masks, which are hand-crafted from papier-mâché, and designed for theatre costumes. She is a sculptor and painter who designs beautiful and functional artwork.
Delicious Brazilian-inspired food and drink will be provided by Da Fazenda, while attendees enjoy making Samba Shakers, shopping at the Brazilian Marketplace, and participate in opportunity drawings of artwork and rare collectibles.
As part of EFA’s ongoing Passport Series, this event is expected to sell out. Seating is limited. Advance tickets are $40 for EFA members, $45 for the general public or $50 at the door. The best deal is the combo package: membership and admission for $50 in advance. For tickets, visit: www.encinitasarts.org. Our Annual Party
/in UncategorizedTopping of a great year, the EFA celebrated the holiday season of 2017 with our annual party at the Community Room of the Encinitas Library on December 7, 2017. Although sobered by the continuing fires in California, the EFA managed to take out some happy time to mark the end of a successful year of activities and express our appreciation to all who help make this a wonderful local organization. There was much delicious food and merriment, capped by performances of the EFA supported Encinitas Ballet Folklorico and the art work by EFA Student Leadership Council. Raffles of donated items added extra excitement. Thanks to everyone who helped set up and staff the party, and contributed goods and food. EFA members and friends enjoyed coming together and having a good time.
